MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Dr. Eileen Vickery will guide us on a tour of Lao She’s charming Beijing courtyard residence and a look at his life through his works. Lao She is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Chinese writers of the 20th century. A prolific writer of modernist novels, satire, science fiction, proletarian fiction, and plays, he demonstrates a unique intersection of traditional Chinese culture with a modernist lens and brings alive the old city of Beijing, with its historic landmarks, crowded streets, and Beijing dialect. We will hear passages from his novel, Rickshaw Boy, set in Beijing and discuss his best-known play, Tea House, and how Lao She’s fiction fits within the framework of modern Chinese literature.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Eileen Vickery has lived and worked in China for over 10 years, as well as most recently in Hong Kong and Malaysia. She has a Ph.D. in Chinese Literature and Languages (2004). Previously in Beijing, she has taught Chinese literature and Gender Studies at IES Beijing Abroad at Beijing Foreign Studies University and classes for the Peking University-Yale University joint undergraduate program.
