MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Charles Parton is an expert on Chinese domestic politics. After 37 years as a diplomat, first for the British Government, mainly in China (other postings include Afghanistan, Cyprus, Libya and Mali), latterly in the Political Section of the EU delegation in Beijing, he left China a year ago to set up on his own. However the temptation to return to cover the Party Congress and aftermath has proved too great and he is back until December as Adviser to the British Embassy in Beijing. He speaks and reads Chinese fluently.
