After a sold-out introduction to the Year of the Sheep last year, we are pleased to welcome back Mr. Huang Yong Song, Taiwanese publisher and folklorist, to shed insight into the year ahead. Huang will explain Chinese cultural beliefs, expectations, and traditions for the coming zodiac year. Originally from Taiwan’s Taoshan County, Huang now lives mainly in Beijing. Huang is a passionate educator, promoter and advocate for Chinese traditional folk cultures and cultural heritage: in 1971 Huang co-founded the magazine ECHO to promote traditional Chinese culture (the publication appears in Chinese as Hansheng, or “Chinese Voice”) ECHO was named “Best in Asia” by TIME magazine in 2006.

The Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP): The Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP) is an officially registered NGO committed to protecting the fabric and culture of old Beijing. Since it’s establishment in 2001, CHP has completed many successful projects in Beijing and a proven track record of standing up for Beijing’s cultural heritage. Past projects in Beijing have included Public Education on Heritage Lecture Series, Media Trainings on In-depth Cultural Heritage Reporting, Beijing Traditional Courtyard Renovation Training, and the Friends of Old Beijing Project. CHP is currently launching a new project focusing on old Beijing: “Project Walk the Old City – Beijing Hutong Conservation Status Survey”. Royal Asiatic Society Beijing: RAS Beijing engages Chinese and international academics, policy-makers, artists and media in exploring cultural interactions between China and the rest of the world – past, present and future. RAS Beijing was established in April 2013 as a chapter of the Royal Asiatic Society China. RAS Beijing has an advisory group from China’s business and policy communities, and a core team responsible for implementation. It is an independent non-profit volunteer organization.

The Courtyard Institute: The Courtyard Institute was founded by a few friends with a common vision and passion to preserve “Old Beijing Culture”. Together we hope to be able to pursue and share with others our heartfelt interests that include but are not limited to culture, history, heritage preservation, traditional craftsmanship and architecture. Besides regular cultural talks and events, the Courtyard Institute organizes tailor made courses and programs for both adults and children in their beautiful courtyard residence just next to the Imperial City Wall.
