You’re invited to a July 7 talk by Dr. Freda Murck on “Gift Giving in Chinese Culture”. In dynastic China, presenting gifts 送礼was an integral part of Chinese etiquette 礼貌 as was the practice of hosting banquets. In today’s China we all have to deal with giving gifts whether red envelopes or material goods. This illustrated lecture will offer some historical anecdotes about gifts given and received and expectations of reciprocity.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
An historian of Chinese visual culture, Dr. Freda Murck lived in China 1997-2013, working at the Palace Museum and teaching at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Peking University. She has written articles and a book on Chinese painting and poetry, and co-curated the exhibition “Mao’s Golden Mangoes and the Cultural Revolution.” Prior to living in Asia, Freda was Associate Curator of Asian Art at The Metropolitan Museum. She received her PhD from Princeton University.
