Mao’s Last Dancer, Showing by Rasbj Film Club
The RASBJ film club invites you to a showing of “Mao’s Last Dancer,” about Li Cunxin who at the age of 11 was selected by cohorts of Madam Mao to study ballet at the Dance Academy in Beijing. In 1979, Li travels to Texas to dance there as part of a cultural exchange program; he secretly dates and falls in love with an American dancer. When the Beijing government calls on Li to return home, he marries his lover, defects, and is forbidden from returning to the country of his birth. Banned from communicating with his relatives in China and beset by other challenges, Li pursues his passion for ballet. The drama is based on the autobiography of Li Cunxin, who went on to perform as principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.
