ABOUT THE EXCURSION:
Douglas Red, who worked in Tianjin’s banking industry for nearly a decade and has a degree in Asian studies, will guide us through the city’s one-time financial district and foreign concessions. During the early part of the last century, Tianjin was tantamount to “the Switzerland of China” where warlords laundered their cash, housed their concubines, and hatched their conspiracies — often living in close proximity to their sworn enemies. We’ll follow in the footsteps of the last emperor of China Puyi, “Young Marshall” Zhang Xueliang, and Herbert Hoover (who helped rescue children during the tumult of the Boxer Rebellion and made his first million in the city’s lucrative mining industry before becoming President of the United States).
