MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: 
Dr. Martin Raiser will review 40 years of poverty reduction in China, applying new research carried out with China’s Centre for International Knowledge in Development to the story of the developing world’s most remarkable record of sustained poverty reduction.
Martin will be joined by Dr. Roli Asthana, who will talk about the role of political economy and institutions in poverty reduction. She will look at China’s experience through a comparative lens, drawing on her experience of working on poverty in other parts of the developing world, most notably South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. She will delve into issues of vulnerability and resilience, inequality, migration, environment and gender.
This event will be held under Chatham House rules.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Dr. Martin Raiser is the World Bank Country Director for China, Korea and Mongolia. Since joining the World Bank in 2003, Dr. Raiser has held positions as the Country Manager in Uzbekistan; Economic Advisor in Ukraine; Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova; Country Director for Turkey and, most recently, from 2015-2018, Country Director for Brazil. Dr. Raiser holds a doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Kiel, Germany, and degrees in Economics and Economic History from the London School of Economics.
Dr. Roli Asthana assumed her position as Head of DFID China (now known as Development Director China) at the British Embassy Beijing in 2017. Previously she was Deputy Head of DFID India based in Delhi. She has worked at the (former) Department for International Development since 2003 in a variety of country and regional roles in and on the Middle East & North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, South-East Asia and Central Asia. Before that she was an academic who taught at the London School of Economics.
