MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Prof. Per Alstrom is a world-renowned ornithologist at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Uppsala University, and the SwedishSpecies Information Center of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. A prolific author and editor, Alstrom also has close ties to several scientific institutions in China and neighboring countries.
He writes: “I’ve travelled extensively across China since 1984, many times to places where the locals had never seen a Westerner before. The main aim of these trips has been to study birds, in the beginning just for pleasure (birdwatching), later for scientific research in collaboration with Chinese colleagues (still a pleasure!). These excursions have led to the description of five bird species new to science, and to revised treatment of several subspecies to species status. Using photos, sound recordings and video clips, I’ll bring the audience along on some of these trips, to show a fraction of the incredible variety of birds, mammals, insects, plants, cultures and sceneries found in China. I will also touch on the perceived changes and present threats to the Chinese avifauna.”
