Chinese Law and Western Influence, from Qing to the New Civil Code     

 

WHAT: A conversation with German legal expert Dr. Marco Haase on the transformation of Chinese law in the last 120 years: “From the Great Code of the Qing to the New Civil Code”.

WHEN: Thursday April 22 2021, 7:00 PM Beijing Standard Time. Please arrive at 6:30 PM. Refreshments will be available at attendees’ expense.

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: Since the end of the Qing Empire Chinese society has transformed from top to bottom – and so has Chinese law. In our RASBJ talk, Haase will take us on a tour starting from the traditional Chinese legal system and its Confucian and Legalist background to the challenges of the 20th century. We will catch a glimpse of the law of Imperial China and the milestones on the way to modernizing the Chinese legal system by the reception of western legal language, concepts, statutes and institutions. We will be invited to compare these developments to the history of Buddhism in China.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: Dr. Marco Haase is Programme Director of the Sino-German Legal Cooperation Programme of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Dr. Marco Haase studied law and philosophy and received his doctoral degree at Humboldt University Berlin. He has spent more than 14 years in China,  including 8 years as deputy director of the Chinese-German Institute for Law (CDIR) at China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL). Since 2015 he has been involved in the Sino-German Legal Cooperation Programme of GIZ in Beijing , as Director since October 2019.
