Join us on a day trip to a cluster of evocative 1000-year-old pagodas, in a tranquil valley about 1.5 hours’ drive from the city. Beijing historian Wang Xiaoxin will provide commentary on these monuments to China’s search for spiritual identity. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, ‘Iron-wall Silver Mountain’ which rises dramatically above the pagodas was one of Beijing’s eight great scenic sites; it used to be a famous Buddhist shrine. Over four dynasties — Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing — many pagodas were built here and 18 remain standing.  Why were pagodas so important during that era, and what symbolism is woven into their construction? Historian Wang will explore these and other topics related to Beijing’s spiritual past.

WHEN: Sunday March 3, departing the Hilton Hotel (see below) at 9.00 AM and returning approximately 5:00 PM

HOW MUCH: RMB 300 for RASBJ members, RMB 350 for non-members, which covers transport, Wang’s fee, entrance tickets, audiophone rental and lunch. If your request to attend is confirmed, payment will be requested in advance and is non-refundable.
