How is Chinese Art Responding to the 21rst Century: Changing State/State of Change- a talk by Luise Guest.
How is art in China shifting and changing in response to social change? Are distinctions between East and West irrelevant in a globalized world? Luise Guest, of the White Rabbit Collection of Contemporary Chinese Art in Sydney, will examine the work of contemporary artists who reinvent and renew Chinese traditions, from ink painting and calligraphy to porcelain, from woodcuts to embroidery. Her hour-long talk will include a PowerPoint presentation showing images from four recent exhibitions at the White Rabbit Gallery, drawn from this significant private collection in Sydney. Key artists include Gao Rong, Geng Xue, Liu Jianhua, Xu Bing, Sun Xun, Wang Lei, Yang Mushi, Qiu Anxiong and Qiu Zhijie. Others, including Xu Zhen, position their work strategically in the increasingly narrow space between East and West.

Sydney-based writer and researcher Luise Guest is Manager of Research for the White Rabbit Collection of Contemporary Chinese Art in Sydney. Her talk (in English) focuses on the largest collection of Chinese Contemporary Art outside of China, with more than 3000 works, all produced after the year 2000, by more than 700 artists. She will talk about what the collection reveals about Chinese art now, with a focus on the revival and reinvention of ancient traditions such as ink and porcelain, and the work of a younger generation of global artists.
