WHAT: Purchase tickets for the new Chinese musical extravaganza “Lady Zhaojun”, produced by an all-star line-up and directed by Li Yugang, an immensely popular male actor famous for singing female roles, Li plays lead character Wang Zhaojun, a legendary beauty in the imperial harem who makes personal sacrifices to promote peace with her nation’s neighbors during the Western Han dynasty. The performance, which is in Chinese, features lavish production values and stage/costume design.

DETAILS:  This contemporary Chinese musical ​tells the story of fabled Chinese beauty Wang Zhaojun, who agreed to leave the Western Han imperial harem to be married to a Xiongnu tribal chieftain for the sake of ethnic harmony. Famous Chinese entertainment stars lead the music composition, artistic direction and costume design teams, including Oscar-winner Tim Yip who was artistic director for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. The star of the show, and its director, is Li Yugang, 37. Li got his start working in a nightclub and worked his way up to become modern China’s most popular male actor singing and performing female roles. Likened to the reknowned pre-1949 opera performer Mei Lanfang, Li has performed at the Sydney Opera House and is an icon in the contemporary Chinese culture scene. More details
