ABOUT THE EVENT:

Naval Surgeon Charles Courtney documented his visits to ports along the China coast from Canton to Shanghai and gave eyewitness accounts of the Canton campaign during the Second Opium War and of the failed assault on the Taku forts in 1859. Michael Humphries uses Courtney’s own journals to detail and dissect the medical history of the time. He will discuss how these medical journals provide valuable insight into diseases of the time – like typhoid, ‘gleet’ and ‘pox’.
