“Valley of the Cats: Yak Dumplings and Snow Leopard Selfies in Qinghai
Mar. 13, Wed: “Valley of the Cats: Yak Dumplings and Snow Leopard Selfies in Wildest Qinghai”
You’re invited to join a discussion — and enjoy stunning images – about a remote corner of Qinghai where local yak-herding families help introduce tourists to local wildlife. Prominent naturalist John Mackinnon – whose “Field Guide to the Birds of China” is a classic for birders here – and Beijing-based conservationist and environmental lawyer Terry Townshend will transport us to the “Valley of the Cats”, home to diverse flora and fauna including the elusive snow leopard. Mr. MacKinnon has worked in ecology and conservation in Asia for five decades; he’ll show video and photos related to the Valley, from which he has just returned. Mr. Townshend will explain how he partnered with the Chinese NGO Shanshui Conservation Center to launch the community-based tourism project. He runs the Birding Beijing website and is a keen photographer; one of his camera traps captured an astonishing image — some called it the “snow leopard selfie” — which went viral last year.
