WHAT: “Exploring the Imperial Estate :a Translator’s View of the Palace Museum:” by Adam Ensign, an RASBJ Zoom talk with QA

WHEN: Nov. 4, 2020 Wed. from 21:00-22:00 PM Beijing Standard Time

MORE ABOUT THE EVENT: The Forbidden City is the nexus of Ming and Qing imperial history and serves as a center for Chinese culture, scholarly research, and political influence. For many domestic and international tourists, China-watchers, Beijingers, and expats, the site is a spectacular destination they visited once years ago or seemingly countless times with visiting family and friends. Some approach the imperial courts with reverence for the sacred institution governed by the Son of Heaven. Others hold disgust for the establishment’s oppression of the masses. During the conjunction of the sixth centenary of the construction of the Forbidden City and the ninety-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Palace Museum, we will explore an insider’s perspective with highlights of the museum’s collection of architecture and art as well as a few insights into its organizational structure.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Since 2013, Adam Ensign has worked as a part-time translator and editor for the Palace Museum’s Department of IT, Imaging, and Digital Media; his work primarily involves preparing English content for the museum’s website and other digital media, from introductions for exhibitions and individual works of art to press releases on major events and organizational developments. He is also a full-time instructor in the School of Foreign Languages at Renmin University.
